Epstein story shows investigative journalism is thriving

NEW YORK (AP) — The Miami Herald’s stories on sex trafficking charges against billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein illustrate a counter-intuitive trend: Investigative journalism is thriving as the news media industry struggles.

In announcing new charges against Epstein 11 years after the financier secretly got a sweetheart deal from federal prosecutors in Florida to settle nearly identical allegations, New York prosecutor Geoffrey Berman said Monday that his team was “assisted by excellent investigative journalism.”

“It’s really gratifying,” Aminda Marques Gonzalez, president, publisher and executive editor of the Herald, said Tuesday. “You hope your work will have impact. It’s beyond your expectation to have your work cited as the basis for an arrest.”

While Berman did not cite the Herald by name, it was obvious he was referring to the work of journalist Julie K. Brown, who in a series of stories, including a big investigative piece last November, reported on at least 60 women who said they had been sexually abused by Epstein between 2001 and 2005, when they were minors. Eight agreed to be interviewed.

The Herald’s story, which Brown spent 18 months on, came as news organizations are finding that investigative work helps them stand out and is rewarding in a rough business climate. Recent examples include stories looking into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election, Donald Trump’s behavior before and during his presidency and sexual misconduct by public figures.

“It used to be said in this business that we couldn’t afford to do investigative journalism,” said Martin Baron, executive editor of the Washington Post. “Now we have to do investigative journalism. First of all, it’s at the core of what readers expect of us and increasingly, it’s at the core of our business model as well.”

Three weeks ago, the Post announced it was adding 10 new positions devoted to investigative journalism – increasing its staffing in this area from eight to 26 since the beginning of 2017.

The newspaper won a Pulitzer in 2018 for its revelations about sexual misconduct by Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore. The Moore story was part of the Post’s “rapid-response” team; along with the traditional long-term projects, news organizations are seeking more nimble investigative teams that respond to breaking news.

Besides adding staff, Gonzalez said she has tried to establish a culture at the Herald where departments throughout the newsroom are pursuing enterprise projects. What she doesn’t want is an investigative team “isolated in a corner of the room, which used to be the case.”

The New York Times also has emphasized an investigative ethos across the newsroom. The Times won a 2019 Pulitzer for an exhaustive study of Trump family finances and, in 2018, shared a Pulitzer with The New Yorker for reporting on sexual misconduct.

“Broadly speaking, with the attacks on the press and on facts there has been a reinvigoration of the investigative mission of journalism,” said Matthew Purdy, deputy managing editor who oversees investigations at The New York Times. “I don’t mean just at the Times but across the industry. It’s sort of unmistakable.”

Big investigations aren’t new. There’s a history of memorable digging on Watergate and the Pentagon Papers. And Baron was editor at the Boston Globe when it published a series of stories revealing priests’ history of sexual abuse and the church’s ensuing cover-up, which was chronicled in the 2015 movie “Spotlight.”

But when the newspaper industry’s financial downturn intensified in the 2000s, investigative units were often cut. Many of the news organization’s bean counters saw them as luxuries, said Doug Haddix, executive director of the organization Investigative Reporters & Editors.

IRE’s membership is now at a record-setting 6,178, up from around 4,000 in 2010, Haddix said. Its Houston conference last month set an attendance record. Where the typical IRE conference attendee once worked at a newspaper, now a member is just as likely to work in television or at a non-profit web site. Sold-out IRE workshops show reporters and editors are looking to become more employable by learning digital journalism and how to better mine public records, he said.

Things were looking so dire a decade ago that Michael Hudson thought he’d be using his skills in a different profession by now, perhaps as a private investigator. Instead, he’s global investigations editor at The Associated Press, which has beefed up investigation teams internationally and domestically. The AP also is creating a dedicated team focused on investigations that spin off breaking news.

The AP won a 2019 Pulitzer for investigations around the conflict in Yemen, and in 2016 an all-female team of investigative reporters won a Pulitzer for breaking news about slavery in the fishing industry in Southeast Asia.

“I feel like there’s been a really heartening turnaround,” Hudson said.

While the mission is important, news organizations say the work helps the bottom line. The AP found its Yemen stories were very popular with readers. Many of the Post’s new subscribers cite investigative work as a reason for signing up, and those are the stories readers are drawn to, Baron said.

In the body of the digital version of Brown’s project last November, the Herald invited readers to click if they wanted a subscription. The newspaper collected as many new subscribers in a couple of days that it normally gets in a couple of weeks, and Gonzalez was stunned to find that roughly three-quarters of them lived outside of the Miami area.

They were subscribing to support the journalism.

There seems to be a new spirit among journalists who are more willing to elevate the good work of colleagues at other organizations, as this week has proven with the Herald, said Kyle Pope, editor of the Columbia Journalism Review.

“We as an industry need to stand together,” the Post’s Baron said. “While we’re competitors, we also need to be mutually supportive of quality work. If it’s a trend, it’s a good trend.”

Investigative journalism – Wikipedia

Investigative journalism is a form of journalism in which reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, such as serious crimes, political corruption, or corporate wrongdoing. An investigative journalist may spend months or years researching and preparing a report. Practitioners sometimes use the terms “watchdog reporting” or “accountability reporting”.

Most investigative journalism has traditionally been conducted by newspaperswire services, and freelance journalists. With the decline in income through advertising, many traditional news services have struggled to fund investigative journalism, which is time-consuming and therefore expensive. Journalistic investigations are increasingly carried out by news organisations working together, even internationally (as in the case of the Panama Papers and Paradise Papers), or by organisations such as ProPublica, which have not operated previously as news publishers and which rely on the support of the public and benefactors to fund their work.

The growth of media conglomerates in the U.S. since the 1980s has been accompanied by massive cuts in the budgets for investigative journalism. A 2002 study concluded “that investigative journalism has all but disappeared from the nation’s commercial airwaves”.[1] The empirical evidence for this is consistent with the conflicts of interest between the revenue sources for the media conglomerates and the mythology of an unbiased, dispassionate media: advertisers have reduced their spending with media that reported too many unfavorable details. The major media conglomerates have found ways to retain their audience without the risks of offending advertisers inherent in investigative journalism.

    U, SA!

Trump changed his hat. And his tune?
Trump is MAGA no more. Just The Mugger, The Maggot, and the MAAGGA: “Make Abwehr And Germany Great Again”!
Different hat, the same tune though: “U, SA: You, Trump, are SA“!

However, look into his eyes: sensitive, vulnerable, intelligent, and very, very peculiar man. Donald Trump, his personality, and his political movement have to be studied objectively and in depth, in their proper and natural historical perspectives.

M.N.: Donald Trump, I see only one, very radical and very bold, truly revolutionary Solution for you, and absolutely honestly and sincerely:
    Destroy THE MOB!
You, more than anyone else, know and understand what it means and what it involves. If you really want to achieve the historical greatness:
    Destroy THE MOB!
You can do that. And maybe, it is only you who can do that! Turn the tables on them.
    Destroy THE MOB!
ZIZ IZ your true historical mission. Accomplish it, and everyone will live happily ever after!

    To: #USCongress:

Our most esteemed #LawMakers (as opposed to some Trumpian #LawBreakers):
#SocialMedia #ElectoralManipulations by #IsraeliPrivateIntelligenceFirms have to be investigated very thoroughly.

Regardless of the separate issue of the collaboration, coordination, “collusion” or criminal conspiracy on the part of the Trump Campaign 2016, it appears that all these phenomena were present on the part of the foreign players, and between themselves. They conspired with each other to influence the American Elections to promote their commonly favored candidate Donald Trump, a la “#BoysFunCircle, for the lack of the better description. These parties are (on the relative surface): Russia, Israel, and Arabs represented by UAE.

Image result for Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyanand Putin
Furthermore, it appears that personal relations between the four players of this group are quite close. These four are Trump, Putin, Netanyahu, and MBZ, who visits both Washington and Moscow not infrequently, and looks quite comfortable and at ease in both capitals.

Gerhard Schroeder, the presumed Demiurge – the head of the New Abwehr or one of them, prefers to stay in the shadows and to scheme and manage from behind the scenes, rather wisely and discreetly.

Do you think that the “BUDYONOVTSI” would be able to pull off this complex, sophisticated, brilliantly designed and performed Intelligence Operation “Trump”?! I very much doubt it. Abwehr The Demiurge still reigns supreme, unsurpassed, and without equals.

    Image result for буденовцы

Behind this “Russland Affare” is  the New Abwehr, which includes the operational and managerial remnants of Abwehr before 1944-1945, updated and re-equipped, and the Intelligence Services and/or the ruling circles and the rulers of those mentioned above countries, and very likely the Intelligence Services of contemporary (“new united”) Germany, possibly BND, which is confirmed by the clear and the clearly exploited geopolitical benefits that this “Russland Affare” brought for Germany and for her standing in the World.

    Image result for New Abwehr
This is the entirely hypothetical construct at this point, but this construct is well based and has the significant explanatory power, including for the major events after WW2.
It also appears, that the hypothetical New Abwehr leads and manages for its own goals and purposes, as its powerful new tool, the TOC, the MOB in its latest convenient reincarnation: the “Red Mafia”: The Russian-Jewish-Israeli-Transnational Organized Crime.
Please see details in my articles and tweets.

    Image result for New Abwehr
I am absolutely convinced that the high quality, comprehensive, in-depth Congressional Investigation is needed to address all these issues, from the assessment of the multi-prong elections 2016 interference efforts, to the hypothetical roles of the hypothetical New Abwehr, and to the other entities in this and other affairs after WW2.

Image result for trump and deutsche bank
With regard to Trump’s motivation, his mythical $4B “Brand Value” as the security on the Deutsche Bank’s mortgage, might be helpful in explaining his newly found political enthusiasm, but this issue also needs further investigation, in the light of the long standing, traditional and “natural” and intimate, shall we say, relationship of the Deutsche Bank with the German Intelligence.

    Most Sincerely,

    Michael Novakhov

Joel Zamel‘s name does not even come up in the searchable Mueller Report, unless it is redacted due to “ongoing investigation“.
The extent and the depth of his companies’ Social Media Manipulations and other shenanigans, some of them overtly criminal, might exceed all the other attempts by far, given their global reach and experience. The activities of theRussian “Internet Research Agency” might be a child’s play by comparison, and could well be the misleading cover and/or the secondary, less efficient and less important tool.

“Israeli intervention in US elections ‘vastly overwhelms’ anything Russia has done, claims Noam Chomsky” – See this Google Search.
With all due disrespect for the involved parties, this is the same Russian-Jewish,

In fact, all these “social media companies” and groups specializing on Elections Interference, might be owned and operated, through persons like Zamel and others, by the same people and operators, namely the Russian Israeli Jewish Mafia; and it is absolutely does not matter who those intermediaries are or what shingles they hang on their doors.

And the Jewish-German New Abwehr is very likely behind all of this, in their efforts to conquer and to rule the World “legally”, without big wars, through elections; according to their old, original, and still valid plan.

No statistical or quantitative studies were performed or even proposed to address the questions about the effects of the interference by the various parties and their comparisons, while the speculations on this subject as rampant as they are fruitless, and just the speculations; or at best, the “educated (or not so educated) guesses.

Ask Nate Silver, a reputable pollster, to do these studies, it is better than nothing and better than ignorance. And after that jump to your conclusions.

Investigate and prosecute if indicated, Joel Zamel, his companies, and all other similar figures and entities. His implied, reported, or presumed connections with the Israeli Intelligence circles should not be in any way the impediment to these inquiries, unless these circles intend to be dragged into these inquiries themselves.

The possibly staged events like those suspicious incidents with Hillary Clinton and Jerry Nadler, described in the previous posts, are the boon for the “Social Media Manipulation” firms like the Psy Group owned by Joel Zamel; that’s exactly what they need: to paint the political opponents as weak, sick, incapable, and incapacitated. That what makes you think that these events were purposefully staged, possibly with the new type of the Portable Directed Energy Weapons, which apparently (we do not know much about it) used in the military-intelligence operations, and in police work for crowd control.
